Sophomore pass rusher Beau Atkinson may live in Chapel Hill, but he will also take up residence in Florida State quarterbacks' nightmares. He had 3.5 sacks in a devastating display on a day where the Tar Heels defense combined to accumulate more sacks in their last two games than all of the previous seven games this season.
Atkinson got to work on the third Florida State offensive series of the game, getting a sack on 1st & 10 on the FSU 12-yard line. On the next play, he combined with Kaimon Rucker to sack Glenn Brock again, this time for an 11-yard loss:
With Brock sent to the bench, it was Luke Kromenhoek's turn to feel the pain. Beau Atkinson sacked him on back-to-back plays as well, so he wouldn't feel like Glenn Brock was getting preferential treatment. Kromenhoek was taken down for two 8-yard losses, and Florida State was forced to punt down 14-3.
With Geoff Collins and his band of merry men suddenly sack-crazy, Beau Atkinson has an opportunity to fill his plate. With Omarion Hampton and the offense scoring touchdowns and eating up the clock, opposing offenses will be forced to pass more to catch up, giving the Tar Heel defenses more chances to accumulate sacks.
Atkinson for one, seems up for the task!
