Omarion Hampton is a member of the AP All-American team after having an outstanding season for the UNC football program in 2023.

One of the nation’s best running backs is being honored for his stellar 2023 season.

Omarion Hampton of the UNC football program has been named a second-team All-American by the Associated Press. Stepping in as the Tar Heels featured back, Hampton ran for 1,442 yards and 15 touchdowns on 234 carries this season.

Hampton rushed for the fifth-most yards in college football and the ninth-most touchdowns. Three out of the four players ahead of Hampton played an extra game this season, so it remains to be seen where Hampton would’ve placed with an extra game under his belt.

Hampton was the only Tar Heel to make an All-American team, which was a surprise to many. Quarterback Drake Maye is seen by scouts as a top-five draft pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, but with a slew of quarterbacks putting together strong seasons, Maye was left out of the mix.

Hampton had many memorable performances this season for the UNC football program, but his most notable was against Appalachian State. In a 40-34 overtime win against the Mountaineers, Hampton carried the ball 26 times for 234 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged nine yards per carry, and his longest run was 68 yards.

Hampton had a streak of six consecutive games over 100 yards that started on October 14 against Syracuse and lasted until November 18 against Clemson. He ran all over the stout Clemson defense, carrying the ball 19 times for 178 yards and two touchdowns.

Omarion Hampton should have a favorable matchup against the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The Mountaineers allow 144.3 rushing yards per game and 4.4 yards per carry. Hampton could find himself as the main weapon on offense if quarterback Drake Maye decides to opt out, but no announcement has been made.
