UNC Basketball: Top-25 Wins Matched During Hubert Davis Era
By Jordan Falls
Through just eight games of the UNC Basketball season, the Tar Heels have already matched their previous top-25 season win total in the Hubert Davis Era.
All UNC Basketball fans have recognized the struggles that the program has faced during the first two seasons in the Hubert Davis Era as a first-time head coach. Outside of the 2021-2022 season for a team that went from potentially missing the NCAA Tournament in mid-February to getting hot at the right time and making a memorable run to the National Championship game, it’s been a learning experience.
During that time, the Tar Heels failed to win big games against ranked opponents, and as a result, led to them missing the NCAA Tournament in 2023 due to a lack of resume building wins. Well, in year three of Davis, the 2023-2024 UNC Basketball team has already matched the number of top-25 wins that the program experienced in each of the previous two seasons.
With wins over No. 20 Arkansas and No. 10 Tennessee, the Tar Heels are 2-0 on the season against top-25 opponents (at the time of the matchup). Obviously, the resume-building portion of that will matter where those teams finish at the end of the season, as Arkansas fell out of the rankings following their loss to the Tar Heels but could very well jump back into rankings throughout the season.
Those won’t be the last opportunities either for a UNC Basketball team that has one of the toughest schedules in the country and is in the midst of a streak of games that consists of Villanova, No. 20 Arkansas, No. 10 Tennessee, Florida State (receiving votes), No. 4 UConn, No. 12 Kentucky, and No. 25 Oklahoma. The Tar Heels are currently 3-1 in that stretch.
The challenges will continue, but UNC Basketball fans have to be pleased and encouraged with the performances against quality competition in year three under Hubert Davis, who completely reconstructed the roster during the off-season.
