UNC Football: Sam Howell uses cleats to support hungry kids
Former UNC Football star quarterback Sam Howell is supporting an effort to get food on the tables of hungry North Carolina kids as part of this year’s “My Cause My Cleats” drive.
Late Friday afternoon, former UNC Football quarterback and current Washington Commanders starter Sam Howell announced that he is using the NFL’s “My Clause My Cleats” drive to support a charity that works to feed hungry local kids. Watch the announcement here.
In 2021, just before the start of his junior year at North Carolina Howell announced a partnership with TABLE NC, a Carrboro-based charity that focuses on hunger and nutrition efforts for underprivileged kids in Orange County. It was one of the first deals Howell signed after the NCAA allowed student-athletes to profit off their name, image, and likeness.
This past spring, Howell headlined a TABLE fundraising dinner alongside current UNC Football quarterback Drake Maye, head football coach Mack Brown, current UNC Basketball star Armando Bacot, and former UNC Basketball great Tyler Hansbrough.
Howell will feature TABLE on his cleats during this week’s clash with the Miami Dolphins. The My Cause My Cleats initiative allows players to wear customized cleats showcasing the causes important to them during Weeks 13 and 14 of the NFL season. For instance, Mitchell Trubitsky, currently Kenny Pickett’s backup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, is supporting Thumbs Up Mission, a charity that lifts up kids and families who are fighting cancer.
In his second year in the NFL, Howell is having a sterling season. He is currently the league leader in passing yards, passing attempts, and completed passes. This is all the more remarkable as the Commanders are presently last in the AFC East. It’s probably because they haven’t done a very good job protecting Howell; he has been sacked 55 times for -375 yards, more than anyone else in the league.
