UNC Football tabbed as landing spot for Transfer Quarterback
By Jordan Falls
The 2023 UNC Football regular season ended just over 48 hours ago, but there’s already speculation of who the next QB in Chapel Hill may be.
The end of another UNC Football regular season came to a close on Saturday night in Raleigh with a 39-20 loss to the Wolfpack. Since then, several Tar Heels have entered their name into the transfer portal. However, we have our first report of Chapel Hill being a potential landing spot for someone else in the transfer portal.
College football fans are still getting used to the transfer portal, and while it’s also sad to see some guys leave your program, the opposite can be said when your team receives a commitment from a player in the transfer portal. Alijah Huzzie is a great example for this year’s UNC Football team.
While we do not have official confirmation that star UNC Football quarterback Drake Maye is entering the NFL Draft yet, it is fully expected and with that, means finding the next QB1 for the Tar Heels. Is it on the current roster? Or does it come from the transfer portal? One name is already being linked to North Carolina…
Texas A&M quarterback Max Johnson entered the transfer portal, and the Tar Heels appear to be in the lead to land the graduate transfer. Johnson began his career at LSU before transferring to Texas A&M, where he only played four games during the 2022 season.
During the 2023 season, Johnson completed 62.1% of his passes and threw nine touchdown passes in eight games for the Aggies. He spent most of the season banged up and dealing with a rib injury.
Johnson is only viewed as a rising junior on the football field and will have two years of eligibility remaining despite having played four seasons. He has a COVID year of eligibility remaining and only made four appearances in 2022, allowing him to redshirt and regain that year of eligibility. As a graduate transfer, he is also eligible immediately in 2024.
Could the UNC Football program be looking at their next QB1?
