UNC Football: Players of the Game Announced versus Campbell
By Jordan Falls
The UNC Football programโs Players of the Game honors returned this week following the 59-7 win over Campbell in non-conference action.
We had six straight weeks of Players of the Game for the UNC Football program as the team started 6-0. Unfortunately, Players of the Game honors are only awarded following wins, not losses, so it has been a few weeks since these honors have been handed out.
Following the 59-7 victory over in-state FCS Opponent Campbell, the coaching staff returned to handing out Player of the Game honors.
Offensively, center and leader of the offensive line, Corey Gaynor, won Player of the Game honors. Gaynor was a key piece in the Tar Heels, rushing for 276 total yards of offense along with three rushing touchdowns. Gaynor and the offensive line also kept the quarterbacks clean throughout the day, allowing only two sacks and three tackles for loss.
On the defensive side of the ball, Cedric Gray, the heart of the Tar Heel defense, had another phenomenal day that is becoming an every-week type of performance. He had nine total tackles, two sacks, and three tackles for loss. Gray was also in on the blocked punt that occurred in the second quarter.
The special teams unit had a good day as a whole, and Jalen Brooks was one of the leaders for that side of the ball. Not only did they have the blocked punt, but they did a good job on the punt protection team themselves and gave Tom Maginness time to punt, averaging 44 yards per punt with two inside the 20.
Mack Brown and the UNC Football program will host Duke on Saturday at 8:00 PM on ACC Network at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
