UNC Baseball: Seventh Tar Heel Reaches Fall Classic
By Jordan Falls
In just a few days, former UNC Baseball pitcher Zac Gallen will become the seventh former Tar Heel to play in the World Series.
In his first-ever post-season appearance, former UNC Baseball pitcher Zac Gallen will be making an appearance in the 2023 MLB World Series. When Gallen takes the mound in this year’s event, we still are not sure which game he will start, he will become the seventh Tar Heel all-time to appear in the Fall Classic.
Gallen joins a list of incredible former Tar Heels to make it to the World Series. It will be the first time since 2016 that a Tar Heel has appeared in the World Series when Andrew Miller made an appearance with the Cleveland Indians, earning a 1-0 win in Game Three of that series.
The Arizona Diamondbacks made the Wild Card round of the playoffs and successfully eliminated the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0, and Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0, and then went to a seven-game series with the red-hot Philadelphia Phillies coming out on top with a 4-3 series win.
During the Diamondbacks post-season run, Gallen has had four appearances, starting all four. He has two wins and two losses during those appearances. Both losses came against the Philadelphia Phillies, who eliminated the 104-win Atlanta Braves from the Playoffs in the prior round.
Gallen picked up a win in the Wild Card round against the Brewers and again in the Division Series against the Dodgers. In his wins, He has pitched a total of 11.1 innings, striking out eight batters and allowing four total runs.
The Diamondbacks and AL Champion Texas Rangers will begin the World Series on Friday, October 27th. Starting Pitchers have not been announced yet. However, the Diamondbacks started Gallen in Game One of the NLCS, but Game Two of the NLDS. So it is unsure which game he will start yet as the Diamondbacks are looking to win their second World Series, and first since 2001.
