UNC Football Plummets In Rankings Following Upset Loss
By Jordan Falls
The UNC Football program entered Week Seven as the No. 10 team in the country in both polls. Where did they fall after the upset loss against Virginia?
Man… Just when it felt like the UNC Football program was beginning to enter the National conversation after a 6-0 start to the 2023 football season and entering the Top 10 following a 41-31 home win over Miami, everything came crashing down less than a week later.
At No. 10 in the country and undefeated, the national media was beginning to take notice of the Tar Heels this season, and then Saturday night happened. Virginia came to Chapel Hill with a 1-5 record, not having won an FBS game in more than a calendar year. All of that changed in Kenan Stadium when the Cavaliers walked out with a 31-27 upset victory over Mack Brown’s Tar Heels for their first road win over an AP Top-10 opponent in program history.
As you may expect, after losing to one of the worst teams in the college football landscape, UNC Football’s Top 10 ranking is no more, and the Tar Heels took a nose dive in this week’s Coaches and AP Top 25 rankings, even though maybe not as far as you may think. So, how did the media react to ranking the Tar Heels in this week’s ranking?
In the Coaches & Associated Press Poll, North Carolina fell seven spots to No. 17, their lowest ranking since Week 2 of this season.
There isn’t much time to dwell on the loss to the Cavaliers. The 24-hour rule is real, and the UNC Football program needs to take it seriously. Georgia Tech is next up on the schedule, and a road game in Atlanta, where the No. 17 Tar Heels are 2-10 in their last 12 matchups, is definitely going to be a challenge. Kick-off against the Yellow Jackets is scheduled for 8:00 PM on the ACC Network.
