Star UNC Football Quarterback Drake Maye sat down with Matt Lienart to discuss this season’s success and staying focused on the next game.

Quarterback Drake Maye knows that the way the UNC Football program stumbled down the stretch last season hurt the chance for a historic season after a 9-1 start, and he is doing everything he can to make sure that doesn’t happen again in 2023.

After a 6-0 start this season, the Tar Heels have a chance at a special season. Maye sat down with former USC Quarterback Matt Leinart to discuss this year and the goals for the 2023 UNC Football team.

The biggest point of conversation throughout the interview was focused on the Tar Heels struggles down the stretch and how they can pull from those experiences to help this year’s team. Maye mentioned it’s college football, and they found out last year against Georgia Tech that anyone can beat anyone. He also mentioned that they know they have to bring their best game week in and week out while bringing the 1-0 mentality.

Leinart asked Maye about UNC Football not winning an ACC Championship since 1980 and what it would mean for him to break that streak. Maye dodged the question in a way more so taking the opportunity to say they know that everyone will be giving the Tar Heels their best shot and they have to continue to put their best foot forward, and to get back to the ACC Championship is their goal.

Remember that piece of cheese Mack Brown has talked about all week after the big win over Miami? Leinart tried to give Maye a piece of that cheese when asking him about the playoff and at what point does the team begin to think or talk about getting to the playoff. Maye re-iterated, as he did at the beginning of the interview, that this team is focused on taking it week-by-week and going 1-0 each week with the goal of getting back to the ACC Championship game.

Maye and the UNC Football program, know that the goals of a potential return to the ACC Championship and possibly even a bigger accomplishment means nothing if they don’t go 1-0 each week. So, for now, it’s one game at a time. Next up: Virginia.
