Incoming Transfer Harrison Ingram is a potential candidate to join the UNC Basketball starting lineup for the upcoming season.

Harrison Ingram was one of several transfers that head UNC Basketball coach Hubert Davis targeted when he began his roster overhaul last spring. Ingram is a rising junior with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Like many of the newcomers, UNC basketball fans may not know what to expect from Harrison Ingram, or maybe you haven’t followed his career on the West Coast in the PAC-12 the last two years. There will be plenty of unknowns during the preseason, but what should you know about the Cardinal transfer?

Prior to North Carolina

North Carolina fans are very familiar with Ingram as he was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2021, and the Tar Heels were in the final two of his decision process. Ingram ultimately decided to attend Stanford and play for former Roy Williams assistant coach Jerod Haase.

During his two-year career at Stanford, Ingram averaged 29.4 minutes per game, starting in all but three games for the Cardinal. He averaged 10.5 points per game through his two seasons and 6.2 rebounds per game. Ingram is a talented six-foot-seven forward who is versatile and can play and defend various positions.

After two seasons at Stanford, Ingram decided to enter the transfer portal and finally come home to Chapel Hill.

What to Expect in 2023-2024

While plenty of roster overhaul happened during the offseason, and there are only two returning starters from last year’s 2022-2023 team, I would expect that Harrison Ingram will be one of the newcomers who will earn a starting spot in this lineup. Where that spot is could still be up in the air, though.

We could potentially see him play the stretch-four position in Hubert Davis’ offense, or we could also play the more traditional three spot and replace Leaky Black’s role. Until we actually see the Tar Heels on the court in a game, we really don’t know what Hubert Davis is thinking or how he will utilize his multiple new pieces.

Bold Prediction

Ingram will be an athletic forward who will be moved around between the three and four positions, depending on the opponent and matchup. At Stanford, in his final year, he averaged 10.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists. I believe we will see those numbers increase in Chapel Hill, and he will be one of the impactful players for this year’s roster.

A point of emphasis this offseason has been rebounding better and sharing the basketball – two things that the 2022-2023 team did not do well. Ingram will provide a boost in both categories and be a key defender, replacing Leaky Black and potentially drawing the opponent’s best scorer.
