We begin this week of our player previews for the 2023-2024 UNC Basketball program with returning sophomore guard Seth Trimble.

Seth Trimble is one of four returners from the 2022-2023 UNC basketball team that failed to make the NCAA Tournament after being ranked preseason No. 1. Like with other younger players from last season, Trimble played in every game, but sparingly.

However, he did see what unfolded from the bench and inside the locker room last season, and he can have an impact on the 2023-2024 Tar Heels to make sure that doesn’t happen again this season.

2022-2023 Season in Review

Last season, Trimble played in 33 games for the Tar Heels, averaging just 9.7 minutes per game though. He averaged 1.8 points per game and a 1:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. His career high in points came against a home win over Wake Forest, where he played 22 total minutes, went 4-4 from the field and 3-4 from the free throw line to record 11 points.

Trimble did show spurts at times last season to provide the ability to be a great defender off the bench for the Tar Heels and will look to continue that into the 2023-2024 season.

What to Expect in 2023-2024

You can expect Trimble not to start during his sophomore campaign due mostly to the experience at the guard position that was filled using the transfer portal with Cormac Ryan, plus RJ Davis is returning. Add in highly touted reclassified Elliot Cadeau, and Trimble’s role is most likely to provide a breather for the starters.

It could be a similar role to what we saw in 2022-2023, but with increased minutes, as we are sure Hubert Davis would like to expand on his bench and not play the same five guys for 35 minutes per game like he felt he had to do last season. Expect Trimble to provide depth behind RJ Davis and Elliot Cadeau, as well as being a lockdown defender off the bench for the Tar Heels.

Bold Prediction

Trimble is the first guard off the bench for Hubert Davis this season to provide a breather for Davis or Cadeau. He develops into more of a scorer than he was last season and is able to provide the Tar Heels with 8-10 points per game this season. To add to his point total, he provides a key defensive element and draws the opponent’s best guard while he is on the floor, earning him key minutes and getting him into the 15-minute-per-game range.
