UNC Football: Sam Howell Named Commanders Team Captain
By Jordan Falls
Former UNC Football quarterback Sam Howell has been named a team captain for the Washington Commanders for the 2023 season.
Former UNC football quarterback was named the starting quarterback for the Washington Commanders a few weeks before the 2023 NFL season was set to begin. This week, in preparation for Week One, the Commanders announced their six team captains for the upcoming season, and Howell was one of the players named to represent the team.
This will be Howell’s second season in the league after being drafted by the Commanders in the fifth round in the 2022 NFL Draft. Howell will start his second career game in the NFL on Sunday, September 10, when the Commanders take on the Arizona Cardinals at 1:00 PM.
His only start during the 2022 season came in Week 18 after the Commanders had been eliminated from playoff contention when they faced the Dallas Cowboys. Howell was 11/19 for 169 yards and a passing touchdown in that game. He also rushed for 35 yards on 5 carries and a touchdown.
The other team captains for the Washington Commanders in 2023 are wide receiver Terry McLaurin, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, cornerback Kendall Fuller, safety Jeremy Reaves, and punter Tress Way. The Commanders’ team captains were voted on by their teammates, and a tremendous honor to receive from your peers in the NFL. This is the first time in their careers that Howell and Reaves have earned team captain honors.
