North Carolina Tar Heels Week Preview: Aug 28 – Sept 3

We are previewing the upcoming week for North Carolina Tar Heels Athletics from August 28, 2023, through September 3, 2023.

Field Hockey – Erin Matson picked up her first career win on Friday night against No. 4 Michigan. The Tar Heels will travel to Pennsylvania for the ACC-Ivy League Challenge this weekend. In their first game, on Friday, September 1st, Carolina will face Penn at 2:00 PM on ESPN+. They will wrap up their trip to Pennsylvania on Sunday against Princeton at 10:30 AM.

Football – While Carolina awaits the ruling on the eligibility of Devontez ‘Tez’ Walker, kickoff is approaching quickly. Drake Maye and the Tar Heels will take the field for the first time in 2023 on Saturday, September 2nd, at 7:30 PM in Charlotte against South Carolina. The game will be nationally televised on ABC. College GameDay will also be live from Romare Bearden Park at 9:00 AM for the first show of the 2023 season.

Men’s Soccer – In their first two games of the season at home, men’s soccer opened the season with a 1-1 tie against Loyola Maryland. Next up, they will travel to Johnson City, Tennessee, to face East Tennessee State on Friday, September 1st, at 7:00 PM.

Women’s Soccer – The Carolina offense has struggled at times four games into the early part of the 2023 season. They are 2-0-2 with two 0-0 ties against Big Ten opponents Wisconsin and Penn State. The two wins have been against Pac-12 opponents California and No. 24 USC, with 3-1 and 4-0 wins, respectively. The Tar Heels will host in-state opponent Gardner-Webb on Thursday, August 31st at 7:00 PM on ACC Network Extra before seeing the schedule increase in difficulty. On Sunday, September 3rd, at 2:00 PM, Carolina will welcome No. 10 Arkansas to Dorrance Field.

Volleyball – The Mike Schall era began with a trip out west for the Catcus Classic in Tuscon, Arizona, where the Tar Heels went 2-1 with wins over Pacific and Arizona and a loss to UC Davis. Carolina will return home to Carmichael Arena this week to host two games. On Thursday, August 31st, they will welcome West Virginia to town for a 6:00 PM match that will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. Following that match, Loyola Maryland will travel to Chapel Hill on Saturday, September 2nd, for a 6:00 PM match.
