UNC Wrestling head coach Coleman Scott has stepped down after being with the program for 9 years and holding the position since 2015.

Long-term head coach Coleman Scott has reportedly stepped away from the UNC Wrestling program. He made it official with a social media post, one that confirmed that he is returning to Oklahoma State.

Scott joined the wrestling program in 2014 as an assistant, then was promoted to head coach just a year later in 2015.

The Tar Heels are coming off their best season since Scott became the head coach, finishing 12th in the nation, the best overall team finish since 1995.

North Carolina had three All-Americans including Lachlan McNeil in the 141-pound weight class, Austin O’Connor in the 157-pound weight class, and Gavin Kane in the 184-pound weight class. UNC also added an NCAA National Champion in 2023 when graduate student O’Connor concluded a perfect 23-0 season with a Championship in the 157-pound weight class.

During Scott’s tenure at North Carolina, the Tar Heels have finished in the top 20 nationally five times, all occurring since 2018 (NCAA Tournament was canceled in 2020). He also produced 13 All-American wrestlers, three NCAA finalists and helped guide Austin O’Connor to national titles both in 2021 and 2023.

Since the news was announced on August 17th, the Tar Heels have posted the position opening and will conduct a two-week nationwide search for a replacement. The search will end around the beginning of September, nearing Labor Day. North Carolina has made associate head coach Tony Ramos the interim head coach until the head coach position has been filled.

Tony Ramos joined the North Carolina coaching staff in 2016 as a volunteer assistant coach after winning an NCAA Championship in 2014 with Iowa. Ramos was promoted to assistant coach in 2018, then was promoted to associate head coach at North Carolina in 2019.
