UNC Football: Drake Maye earns more preseason honors
By Jordan Falls
UNC Football quarter Drake Maye continues to earn preseason honors for the upcoming 2023 football season by being named to another watch list.
Last year, UNC football quarterback star Drake Maye flew under the radar for the first few weeks of the regular season, and no one knew much about him outside of Chapel Hill.
Needless to say, the way he played last season, EVERYONE knows who Drake Maye is heading into the 2023 season… and it shows by the numerous award watch lists he is being named to (it seems almost daily at this point).
To date, Maye has been named to the following preseason award watchlists: Davey O’Brien, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Player of the Year, and ACC Preseason Player of the Year… we can now add the Manning Award to that list now
The Manning Award watch list was announced by the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Tuesday morning with 33 of the nation’s top quarterbacks making the list. This award is voted on by national media and each of the Mannings (Archie, Peyton, and Eli).
Maye was a finalist for the Manning Award in 2022 and is one of five finalists who made the 2023 watch list (Bo Nix, Michael Penix, Jr, Will Rogers, and Caleb Williams). Other notable players who made the Manning Award watch list that the Tar Heels will face this season are South Carolina QB Spencer Rattler and Duke QB Riley Leonard.
Fans of the UNC football program hope that Maye isn’t getting “too much” preseason recognition as the hype continues to build. There will be no flying under the radar this year, and all eyes will be on No. 10 to live up to the preseason hype.
