Former UNC Women’s Basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell was named as one of several coaches to be honored at the Naismith Hall of Fame Coaches Circle.

Sylvia Hatchell was the head coach of the UNC Women’s Basketball program for 33 years from 1986 until 2019. She led the Tar Heels to their only National Championship victory ever, defeating Louisiana Tech in 1994 on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by freshman Charlotte Smith.

She had a luxurious coaching career, recording a career record of 1023-405 for a 71.6 winning percentage. Hatchell was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2013.

On Friday afternoon it was announced that Hatchell would be among four coaches to be honored with benches at the Naismith Hall of Fame Coaches Circle.

Hatchell will be joined by Rollie Massimino, Tom Young, and Kay Yow with benches at the Naismith Hall of Fame. According to ESPN, the benches at the Naismith Hall of Fame Coaches Circle was first started in 2015 by head Kentucky basketball coach, John Calipari, along with several others.

During her time at Carolina, she led the Tar Heels to four ACC Regular Season Championships, eight ACC Tournament Championships, three Final Fours, and previously mentioned, one National Championship. She is also a three-time ACC Coach of the Year winner along with being named National Coach of the Year twice.
