UNC Football: Maye earns more national preseason honors
By Jordan Falls
UNC Football quarterback Drake Maye has been named to the preseason Walter Camp Player of the Year Award watchlist for the 2023 season.
What a time it is for UNC football fans to have a generational talent quarterback in Chapel Hill.
Drake Maye is expected to leave Carolina after next season and will likely go down as the greatest quarterback in the program’s history… assuming he lives up to the hype and expectations that are surrounding him this preseason.
Maye has already earned preseason Heisman favorite nominations, been voted preseason ACC Player of the Year, along with being named to other national awards watchlists. Now, Maye has been named to the Walter Camp Player of the Year Watchlist.
Maye joins forty-five other players from across the country named to the preseason watchlist. The Walter Camp Award is voted on by head coaches and athletic directors at the NCAA level and awarded to the best player in college football.
Top quarterback, and expected to be Maye’s competitor for the Heisman Trophy this year (and potentially the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft), Caleb Williams from USC won the award in 2022. The list will be narrowed to 10 candidates in mid-November before being voted on, and awarded, in early 2024.
