UNC Baseball: Will Sandy contract purchased by Angels
By Jordan Falls
Former UNC Baseball pitcher Will Sandy had his contract purchased by the Los Angeles Angels on Friday afternoon and will join the team’s farm system.
After spending five years in Chapel Hill as a pitcher for the UNC baseball program, Will Sandy was spending the summer in West Virginia with the West Virginia Black Bears, a collegiate summer league baseball team in the MLB Draft League.
After five appearances with the Black Bears, earning the start in all five, Sandy successfully recorded three wins across 25.2 innings pitched while having an earned runs average (ERA) of 2.10 and a WHIP of 1.13.
This was enough to convince the Los Angeles Angels to purchase his contract from the West Virginia Black Bears and add them to their minor league farm system.
The most appearances Sandy saw during his time in Chapel Hill was 22 during his freshman season when he threw 58.2 innings in 11 starts recording a 2-2 record. His best season was his junior year when he threw 24.1 innings, going 1-0 and allowing an ERA of 2.59 in 12 appearances.
Sandy joining the Angels farm system will give him the opportunity to continue to develop coming off a great summer season with the Black Bears where he has been pitching very well.
