Former UNC Women’s Soccer player Alessia Russo continues to show that the program produces worldwide talent year in and year out.

The UNC Women’s Soccer program is well known for displaying its talent and program on the national stage, specifically in the FIFA World Cup.

Every four years when the World Cup takes place, you can always find multiple Tar Heels on several teams. For some years, the United States team has been comprised of more than six Tar Heels.

Former UNC women’s soccer forward Alessia Russo is one of the several representatives of the Tar Heels, playing for her home country of England. On Saturday, England faced Colombia in the quarterfinal round of the knockout stage and was tied at 1 until Russo scored the game-winning goal at the 63′ minute.

Russo’s goal propelled England to the semifinal round where they will face Australia on Wednesday, August 16th at 6:00 AM with a chance to advance to the championship round to face the winner of Spain and Sweden.

Russo played for the Tar Heels from 2017 until 2019 and led the team in goals scored during two of her three seasons in Chapel Hill. She was a phenomenal player for the Tar Heels and likely would’ve led the team in goals her sophomore season had it not been for a season-ending injury. Across her three seasons, she made 57 appearances for Carolina, scoring 28 goals during that time.
