UNC Football quarterback Drake Maye spoke at ACC Media Day on how the end of the last season has motivated him for the 2023 year.

The end of the 2022 UNC football season wasn’t just disappointing for the fans, it was also disappointing for the players within the program. You probably don’t want to relive it, but the Tar Heels started 9-1, were ACC Coastal Division Champions, star quarterback Drake Maye was taking the country by storm, and it looked almost certain they had put themselves in position for a New Year Six bowl bid.

And then the last month of the season happened…

The Tar Heels ended the season 0-4, with losses to Georgia Tech and NC State at home, Clemson in the ACC Championship game, and Oregon in the Holiday Bowl.

The end of the season was brought up at the 2023 ACC Media Day, and Maye went on record to discuss how that is motivating him for this season.

"Obviously, the way we ended last year, lost a lot of close games. Any way you end the season like that, I use it as motivation. That’s all we talk about."

Maye also spoke about the end of the season but also pointed out that the UNC football program can’t dwell on the end of last season if they want to accomplish their goals for 2023. What are the goals for 2023? Well, Maye mentioned that too.

"We were 9-1 rolling into Georgia Tech, and we finished 9-5. Just finding ways to use it as motivation, but at the same time get over that hump and look forward to this season. We’re excited. That’s our goal to get back to the ACC Championship. I don’t think Coach or any of the guys care who we play, just as long as we’re in it. So that’s the main goal. That’s what we’re working towards."

The Tar Heels kick off in 30 days against South Carolina in the same stadium where the ACC Championship will be held in December. It is safe to say that the ACC Preseason Player of the Year will have no problem finding the motivation to make it back to Charlotte for the ACC Championship game.
