UNC Football: Chazz Surratt Grabs Interception in Preseason
By Jordan Falls
Former UNC football player Chazz Surratt made a huge play for the New York Jets in their NFL preseason opener on Thursday night.
Former UNC football quarterback turned linebacker Chazz Surratt is fighting for a spot on an NFL roster this preseason, and he made a huge play on Thursday night that is sure to impress the front office.
Absolutely beautiful drop and read in coverage by Surratt on this play to grab this interception. Surratt was drafted in 2021 by the Minnesota Vikings with the 78th pick in the third round. He saw action in nine games on special teams with the Vikings.
Following the season, Surratt was released by the Vikings during the 2022 preseason and picked up by the New York Jets to be added to their practice squad. He didn’t see any game action with the Jets in 2022 but is hopeful to make a large enough impact during this preseason that he will earn a roster spot in 2023.
As many UNC football fans are aware, Surratt is very versatile and athletic as he was the quarterback for the Tar Heels in 2017 under former head coach Larry Fedora and then when Mack Brown came to the program he was moved to linebacker in 2019.
Surratt’s most memorable play as a Tar Heel was also an interception against rival Duke, one that he read to perfection to seal the game…
As of halftime in the Jets-Browns preseason game, Surratt had recorded four solo tackles to go along with his interception. Be sure to turn into Hard Knocks on HBO in the coming week(s) as Surratt could be one of the players featured looking to make the cut. Best of luck to our former Tar Heel!
