The UNC Women’s basketball program and Courtney Banghart saw their Class of 2023 incoming freshman arrive on campus Monday afternoon.

The UNC Women’s Basketball program has high expectations heading into the 2023-2024 season, and a large part of that is due to the incoming freshman 2023 class. The Tar Heels saw their 2023 class step foot on campus for the first time as college students on Monday afternoon.

The incoming freshman class is headlined by five-star, six-foot-three center Ciera Toomey. Toomey is ranked by ESPN HoopGurlz as the No. 4 overall recruit in the Class of 2023.

North Carolina also has two other players ranked in the top 100 with four-star point guard Reniya Kelly, ranked No. 30 overall, and four-star power forward Rylee Grays, ranked No. 90 overall. Four-star small forward Laila Hull also is part of the 2023 incoming class.

The 2023 freshman class combined with the highly ranked transfer recruiting class that Courtney Banghart is bringing to Chapel Hill is enough reason for UNC women’s basketball fans to be excited before even mentioning the fact that the Tar Heels will return Alyssa Ustby and Deja Kelly off last year’s NCAA Tournament team.

The transfer class is made up of in-conference transfer from Boston College Maria Gakdeng, Iowa State transfer Lexi Donarksi, and Stanford transfer Indya Nivar. It is expected that Gakdeng and Donarski will earn starting spots on the 2023-2024 roster, meaning the highly talented freshman class will be able to provide depth and talent off the bench for the UNC women’s basketball program.
