UNC Football Lands Inside South Carolina DL Top 5
By Jordan Falls
The UNC Football program is actively recruiting the Class of 2024 and on Tuesday found out it was in the Top Five final schools for a defensive lineman.
Marcus Downs, a defensive lineman from Greer, South Carolina, announced via his Twitter account yesterday that he had narrowed his list of schools down to five remaining programs. Among those, was the UNC football program.
Downs is a six-foot-five defensive lineman who carries a 247Composite three-star ranking. He is currently considered the 54th-best player in the country and the eighth-best player in South Carolina. While Mack Brown has placed an emphasis on recruiting the state of North Carolina, there is also an emphasis from the UNC football program to recruit their pipeline and neighboring states, such as South Carolina.
The other programs in Downs’ final five that join the Tar Heels are Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Tennessee. Ironically, no South Carolina program (Clemson or South Carolina), made his final five. According to 247Sports, the lead recruiter for the UNC football program on Downs is defensive line coach, Tim Cross. The release of his final list is just a few days removed from a weekend visit to Chapel Hill and the Tar Heels.
On3Sports lists Downs as the top defensive lineman in the state of South Carolina in their rankings. The Tar Heels defense is something that is a focal point of improvement for Mack Brown and Gene Chizik, being able to add a player like Downs who can provide talent and depth at a key position is important for the Class of 2024 and the future of UNC football.
As of their most recent update, 247Sports has the Tar Heels ranked No. 12 in the country in team recruiting rankings for the Class of 2024 with 14 current commits. This is a great place for North Carolina, but still, a long way to go in the 2024 recruiting cycle.
