UNC Basketball: Theo Pinson once dunked over who?!
By Jordan Falls
Former UNC basketball player Theo Pinson shared a story with the Dallas Mavericks about when he once dunked over his own mother.
Remember that time Theo Pinson dunked over his mom?
If you’re unfamiliar with the story, Pinson recently shared it with his current NBA team on social media in a short video about what went through his mind.
It was the 2013 Under Armour Slam Dunk Contest and Pinson was already committed to Roy Williams and the UNC basketball program as part of the 2014 class. The 2013 dunk contest was certainly talented. The field was Justise Winslow, Ivan Rabb, Stanley Johnson, and eventual UNC basketball commit Seventh Woods.
To hear Pinson tell the story of how he came up with the idea to utilize his mom in a dunk contest is rather interesting. He says he got to the final round and ran out of dunk ideas until he saw his mom cheering him on in the stands.
This gave him the idea to motion her to come out of the stands and have her stand in place near the front of the basket. Theo then took off and completed the dunk that would eventually propel him to win that dunk contest.
Pinson says it was the scariest dunk he has ever attempted. While dunking over your mom may not be the simplest thing in the world, this is coming from a guy who has attempted and completed dunks on some of the biggest stages of college basketball, from a thundering dunk against Duke in the Smith Center to seal a game, to a dunk to start a National Championship game.
