A 2024 four-star linebacker announced his final top three schools list on Friday afternoon and the UNC Football program is in the running.

James Nesta, a four-star linebacker in the Class of 2024, announced via his Twitter page that he has narrowed his list down to three schools and the UNC football program is in the running to land a commitment from Nesta.

Oklahoma and Miami join the Tar Heels in the final three for the linebacker from Cornelius, North Carolina. During his second tenure with the UNC football program, head coach Mack Brown has continued to place an emphasis on recruiting the state of North Carolina heavily and keeping the top talent in-state.

Nesta has a four-star composite ranking with 247Sports that ranks him as the 31st linebacker in the country and 12th best player in the state of North Carolina. Nesta plays at William Amos Hough High School.

The six-foot-four linebacker gave On3Sports his thoughts on each of his final three schools and this is what he had to say about the Tar Heels:

"“I’ve built a really good connection with Coach Chiz and think he’s one of the best coaches at my position. I also have a bunch of friends that play on the team and only have got good feedback from them.”"

It is also noted that Nesta plans to play baseball at the collegiate level regardless of which school he decides to attend. According to his PerfectGame profile, he is listed as a relief pitcher and outfielder with a 9.5-perfect game ranking. The highest PG ranking a player can achieve is a 10, and he is projected to potentially be a Top-10 pick in the MLB Draft.

If Nesta were to be drafted in the 2024 MLB Draft, he would have to choose between college football/baseball and heading to the MLB. If Nesta did skip school for the MLB, it wouldn’t be the first time the UNC football program lost a two-star athlete to baseball.

Most recently, Jordyn Adams was also a four-star football athlete who was committed to the Tar Heels for football and baseball. However, Adams went 17th in the overall 2018 MLB Draft and opted to skip college to play in the MLB.
