The UNC Baseball program found out on Monday afternoon where they would be headed for the first weekend of the NCAA Baseball tournament.

The NCAA Baseball Selection Committee announced the field of 64 teams on Monday afternoon. The UNC baseball team unexpectedly earned a No. 3 seed to participate in the Road to Omaha. Almost all bracket predictions had the Tar Heels as a No. 2 seed.

The Diamond Heels finished the season with a 35-22 record and went 14-14 in conference play earning the No. 7 seed in the ACC Baseball Tournament. Carolina improved their overall resume by going 2-1 at the ACC Tournament, including 2-0 in pool play.

There was some hope among UNC baseball fans that the Tar Heels could earn a top 16 seed and the opportunity to host at The Bosh with a good showing at the ACC Tournament by winning the championship. That hope was ended on Saturday in the ACC Semifinals with a loss to eventual ACC Champion, Clemson.

Carolina will be headed to the Terre Haute Regional, joining No. 1 seed Indiana  State, the No. 14 overall seed. Joining the Tar Heels and Sycamores in the regional will be the No. 2 seed Iowa and No. 4 seed Wright State.

NCAA openers on Friday in Terre Haute are scheduled to begin as follows: Indiana State vs. Wright State, 1 p.m. UNC vs. Iowa, 7 p.m. (ACC Network). Games on Saturday and Sunday are scheduled to start at noon and 6 p.m.

UNC baseball will face No. 2 seed Iowa on Friday, while No. 1 seed Indiana State will play No. 4 seed Wright State. The Terre Haute Regional winner will meet the Fayetteville Regional winner in the Super Regionals the following weekend.

The NCAA Baseball Tournament format consists of 16 four-team regionals that will take play Friday, June 2nd through Monday, June 4th (if necessary). Regional play is a double-elimination format. The winner of each regional will advance to the Super Regionals the following weekend.

All Super Regionals are a best-of-three series, with the eight winners advancing to Omaha to compete for the National Championship in the College World Series.
