The UNC baseball program found itself in the latest D1Baseball Field of 64 Projections and where they could be headed in the NCAA Tournament.

While the UNC baseball team is preparing for ACC Tournament play this week in Durham, D1Baseball has released its most recent Field of 64 projections going into conference tournament play.

It appeared heading into the last week of the regular season that the Diamond Heels could make a solid push to host an NCAA Regional before they faced No. 8 Coastal Carolina and No. 7 Clemson. However, going 0-4 in those games really hurt the Tar Heels’ chances of hosting. Now even a strong outing at the ACC Tournament likely won’t get them a host seed.

With that being said, there’s still room for improvement for this UNC baseball team at the ACC Tournament and they can certainly help themselves out in Durham to fight for a better seed in the NCAA Tournament and get a better draw.

At the moment, D1Baseball projects the Diamond Heels will be the No. 2 seed in the Stanford Regional with Stanford being the No.1 seed in the regional and No. 5 National seed. Joining the Cardinal and Tar Heels at the moment would be no. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara and no. 4 seed San Jose State.

Needless to say, that would be a substantially tough draw for Carolina. Not only would they be paired with the no. 5 overall seed, but they would also be traveling across the country while the other three teams in the regional would half to travel a tenth of the distance (The Diamond Heels would be traveling 2,800 miles while the other three teams combined would be traveling 320 miles combined).

With all that being said, Carolina has the opportunity to improve their seeding this week at the ACC Tournament. A strong showing in Durham and the Tar Heels could likely see themselves staying much closer to home for regional weekend. Check out our ACC Tournament look-ahead here. As the week progresses and results begin to happen, we will continue to follow the bracketology revolving around regionals and who may be going where.
