A recap of results from the previous week in North Carolina Tar Heels Athletics for May 15, 2023, thru May 21, 2023.

This will be one of our last weeks in reviews for North Carolina Athletics for the 2022-2023 athletic season as most if not all, sports will be wrapping up. For the ones that are still playing to this point in the season, we will have full detailed coverage on those teams.

That mostly includes baseball, which is heading into the ACC Tournament this week. More to come on them later today.

Baseball – Unfortunately for the Diamond Heels, it was a rough last week of the season. The Tar Heels dropped their mid-week game against No. 8 Coastal Carolina and then were swept by No. 7 Clemson. They will look to turn that into positive momentum heading into post-season play next week.

Women’s Lacrosse – The Tar Heels were the No. 4 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and earned the right to host the NCAA Quarterfinal Round at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill. Carolina would be looking to advance to their fifth straight Final Four against No. 5 seed Denver. However, a feisty Denver defense would prove to be a problem for the Tar Heel offense.

Carolina took a 4-1 lead with 5:22 remaining in the second quarter and looked to be well on their way to another Final Four appearance. Unfortunately, Denver made some adjustments, slowed the game down, and held the Tar Heels scoreless for the remainder of the game. With two fourth-quarter goals within two minutes of each other, Denver took a 5-4 lead with 6:12 remaining in the game and never gave Carolina an opportunity to answer.

It was Carolina’s first home non-conference loss in five years and the first time they won’t be making an appearance in the Final Four since 2017.

Women’s Tennis – It was such a great week for women’s tennis. They beat Texas 4-2 in the NCAA Quarterfinals to avenge a loss to the Longhorns in the 2022 Final Four and then knocked off no. 4 seed Georgia in the Final Four with a 4-0 win to advance to the National Championship game.

The Tar Heels matched with their rival, and No. 3 seed, NC State in the title game and had an impressive showing. You should read all about it here.
