UNC Football: Former Quarterback Signs Extension
By Jordan Falls
Former UNC football quarterback Mitchell Trubisky recently signed a two-year contract extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Former No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and UNC football quarterback has re-solidified his home in Pittsburgh for the next three years.
It was reported on Thursday that Mitchell Trubisky and the Steelers were finalizing a two-year extension on the backup quarterback’s contract, extending it to three years through 2025.
First reported by Ian Rapoport, Trubisky’s contract is now for three years and is worth $19.4 million. Trubisky will have the opportunity to earn up to $33 million dollars over the entirety of the deal.
Trubisky is part of a Pittsburgh quarterback room consisting of Mason Rudolph and second-year quarterback Kenny Pickett. Trubisky began the 2022 season as the starter for the Steelers after spending a season backing up Josh Allen in Buffalo, but his stay as the starter didn’t last long. He started five games before Pickett took over in the starting role.
While it appears the Steelers are going to continue to go with Pickett as their starter, they have locked up a decent backup in Trubisky for the next several years with this new contract deal. It also appears the contract extension is going to help save the Steelers on cap space in 2023, however, those details are still uncertain at the moment.
Trubisky’s career hasn’t exactly gone the superstar route that one hopes it will when being selected as high as he was in the 2017 NFL Draft, but he still has an opportunity to play in the NFL and be a viable backup for Pittsburgh and have an impact on the franchise in the event Pickett would get injured or not pan out.
