UNC Basketball transfer portal commit Cormac Ryan recently completed a workout at the NBA Draft Combine and fans should be excited.

Cormac Ryan officially entered the transfer portal announcing he would be leaving Notre Dame while also testing the NBA Draft waters on March 24th. He committed to the UNC basketball program almost a month later on April 20th.

Maybe something UNC basketball fans didn’t realize was that even after he committed to the Tar Heels, Ryan is still going through the NBA Draft process and testing the waters to receive feedback on his game. A graduate transfer from Notre Dame, Ryan will provide valuable experience and talent to a UNC basketball roster revamped from last season after losing eight players off last year’s team to graduation and the transfer portal.

While Ryan is committed to the Tar Heels, the “testing the waters” process of the NBA Draft is an excellent tool for college athletes to utilize. It allows them to work out in front of NBA scouts and receive valuable feedback on their game, what they can do to improve, and how they can eventually make it to the NBA.

A video of Ryan working out surfaced early Wednesday morning and if it’s any indication of what the Tar Heels are adding in 2023-24, UNC basketball fans have a lot to be excited about the grad transfer…

In the video posted by Jon Chepkevich, Director of Scouting for DraftExpress.com, Ryan hits fourteen straight corner three-pointers. As Chepkevich points out in his caption, Ryan can shoot and is a guard who can play defense, something the Tar Heels will need as they try to replace Leaky Black.

Shooting and consistent three-point shooting is something that Hubert Davis is desperately hoping and looking for with the addition is Ryan to the 2023-2024 roster. All UNC basketball fans are hoping that Ryan can live up to the expectations of being a grad transfer at Carolina and the bar is set pretty high, thanks to Brady Manek of course.

Ryan doesn’t play the same position as Manek, but he certainly has the previous playing experience, offensive ability, and potential to have a similar impact on the UNC basketball program next season. If Ryan can gain valuable feedback from his experience at the NBA Combine and improve even more over the off-season, the Tar Heels could be in great shape for next season.
