Former UNC Basketball player and current Vanderbilt head basketball coach Jerry Stackhouse was inducted into the NC Sports Hall of Fame this week.
Former UNC Basketball player Jerry Stackhouse continued to add to his accomplishments as a basketball influence this year. It was announced in January that Stackhouse would be inducted as part of the 2023 class to the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. Now, he has officially been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Stackhouse, a Kinston, North Carolina native has a long history of basketball success as a player and coach. As a player, he played at North Carolina under legendary coach Dean Smith from 1993-1995 earning several All-ACC honors and being named First-Team All-American in 1995, earning him the opportunity to have his no. 42 jersey honored in the rafters.
During his fourth season as head coach at Vanderbilt, Stackhouse led the Commodores to a 22-15 record, their first 20-win season since 2014-15 when they were 21-14 under Kevin Stallings. He won SEC Coach of the Year in 2023 and also won the Ben Jobe Award.
Joining Stackhouse in the 2023 NC Sports Hall of Fame induction class were fourteen other inductees from the great Tar Heel State who have impacted their respective sports. One of the most notable inductees that many fans will recognize is a fellow coaching colleague of Stackhouse in the SEC, Rick Barnes.
Another UNC athlete was also inducted into the 2023 class: former UNC Football player Jason Brown. Brown was an offensive lineman for the Tar Heels from 2001-2004. He was then selected in the fourth round by the Baltimore Ravens and spent six seasons in the NFL playing for the Ravens and the St. Louis Rams before retiring in 2011.
