A recap of results from the previous week in North Carolina Tar Heels Athletics for May 1, 2023, thru May 7, 2023.

It was not a very busy week for the North Carolina Tar Heels athletic department because it was final exam week. Let’s dive into what did happen though.

Baseball – The Diamond Heels had two top-15 games versus in-state opponents and were able to come away with a split, 1-1 record against them. They faced Campbell at The Bosh on Tuesday and then went to Greenville to wrap up the end of a three-game series against East Carolina.

Softball – The Tar Heels wrapped up their season with a 10-8 come-from-behind win against the Furman Paladins and now head into the postseason with a 26-27 overall record.

Men’s Lacrosse – Carolina likely saw their season end on Saturday with a 19-8 loss to Notre Dame dropping them to 7-7 overall on the year. The Tar Heels were viewed to be on the bubble for NCAA Tournament play, but the loss to the Irish appears to have ended the postseason tournament hopes for Carolina.

Men’s Tennis – As the No. 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Carolina was able to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels opened NCAA Tournament play on Saturday versus Drake, winning by a score of 4-1 to advance. They would then face Utah, who beat Old Dominion 4-1, on Sunday for a right to advance to the NCAA Round of 32.

Carolina beat the Utes 4-0 and advanced to play no. 1 overall seed Texas in Austin next week for their ninth straight appearance in the Round of 32 on Saturday, May 13. Check out this amazing shot that was SportsCenter Top-10 worthy!

Women’s Tennis – The No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament opened their postseason play on Friday against Charleston Southern with a clean 4-0 sweep of the Buccaneers. The Tar Heels then faced Old Dominion on Saturday with a birth to the Round of 32 on the line and showed why they are the top seed in the tournament with another 4-0 sweep to advance.

Carolina will now face the no. 16 seed Florida Gators on Friday at 5:00 PM.

With the exception of Carolina baseball, which has two weeks left in its regular season, our weekly recaps and previews will feature post-season play for the rest of the 2022-2023 academic school year!
