A recap of results from the previous week in North Carolina Tar Heels Athletics for the week of April 24, 2023, thru April 30, 2023.

The North Carolina Tar Heels athletics department slowly has spring seasons coming to a close with end-of-year games and most sports moving into post-season play. The department held its annual Rammy’s event last week to recognize all the accomplishments from the 2022-2023 season. In case you missed it, here is the recap from the awards show.

Football – The UNC football program saw four players get drafted this past weekend in the 2023 NFL Draft. Josh Downs being the first at pick no. 79 to the Indianapolis Colts. Asim Richards would be drafted in the fifth round by the Dallas Cowboys before Antoine Green (Detroit) and Ray Vohasek (Jacksonville) were drafted in the seventh round.

Baseball – The Diamond Heels entered the week on a three-game losing streak after being swept by Boston College last weekend and failing to come up with hits with runners in scoring position. However, the offense got a spark in their mid-week game vs UNC-Wilmington and won 18-2.

The Tar Heels headed to Virginia Tech for a three-game weekend series, but the offense struggled in game one and lost 7-0. Both games of the doubleheader on Saturday were completely dominated by the Carolina offense powered by Mac Horvath.

Women’s Lacrosse – The Tar Heels advanced to the ACC Championship game with a 16-6 quarterfinal win over Clemson and then a dominant semifinal 15-9 win over Syracuse. Looking to extend their streak of consecutive ACC Championships to seven, the Tar Heels got off to a fast start against no. 1 seed Boston College.

Carolina led 7-4 at the half, scoring seven goals on eleven shots and holding the Eagles to just four goals on twelve shots. However, the Eagles’ half-time adjustments were just more advanced and their defense held the Tar Heels to just two second-half goals, the last one coming at the 7:56 mark in the third quarter to give the Tar Heels a 9-6 lead.

Boston College would outscore the Tar Heels 5-0 the rest of the way and win their first women’s lacrosse ACC Championship in school history, 11-9. The Tar Heels now await to see where they will be seeded in the NCAA Tournament.
