The annual North Carolina Tar Heels Rammy’s event was held Monday night in Chapel Hill where many athletes were recognized for their performances this year.

The North Carolina Tar Heels athletic department held the first annual Rammys event a decade ago in 2013. The event has created a Grammy or ESPY’s type feel for the athletic department, giving out awards to student-athletes and teams for outstanding performances throughout the current athletic season.

The 2022-2023 Tar Heels gathered in Memorial Hall on campus for another rendition of the Rammy Awards.

Eighteen awards were presented at the 2023 Rammy Awards event with plenty of nominees who were well deserving.

It’s always fun to see the student-athletes we support on the field be recognized and dressed up for a great event. Unfortunately for the fans and supporters of the University and all of the UNC athletic teams, this is an event for only the student-athletes, and fans and supporters can not attend.

All fans can follow along on social media where the official UNC Twitter account (@GoHeels), tweets out the award winners as they are announced, but this would be a fun event for fans to be able to attend.

Some notable awards that were announced are:

Best Play of the Year: Drake Maye to Antoine Green for the game-winning touchdown to beat Duke last fall

Best Upset of the Year: Women’s Basketball upsetting three higher-ranked teams at home during an eleven-day stretch when they beat no. 4 Notre Dame, no. 11 NC State, and no. 13 Duke. The win over Notre Dame sparked an eight-game winning streak.

Record-Breaking PerformanceArmando Bacot won this award for his breaking the rebounding record and double-double record for UNC basketball this past season. We are looking forward to seeing what else he can accomplish during his final season in Chapel Hill.

Most Outstanding Team of the Year: It’s rare that we see two teams share an award at an event like this, but that’s what Field Hockey and Women’s Lacrosse did as both teams were honored with this award. Both teams are well deserving of this award. Field Hockey won a National Championship in the fall and Women’s Lacrosse is going to be competing for one this spring in the coming month.

Maybe this is an event that in the future could be moved to a bigger venue, such as Carmichael Arena or the Dean E. Smith Center. This would allow for teams and student-athletes to have their own area at the event, but also make room for fans and supporters of the Tar Heels to attend if they wish and take part in such a fun night to celebrate the previous years’ accomplishments.
