UNC Baseball gets swept at home by Boston College
By Jordan Falls
It was a rough weekend for the UNC baseball program, losing three crucial ACC games to the Boston College Eagles in Chapel Hill.
Not many positive things happened for the Diamond Heels over the weekend. The UNC baseball program could not come up with timely hits or outs when needed.
In game one, Carolina had some bad luck in extra innings as they gave up a two-out ground ball to shortstop that took a bad bounce and over Colby Wilkerson’s head to the outfield to give the Eagles a two-run lead. North Carolina was able to get the tying run ninety feet from home, but Vance Honeycutt struck out looking and Carolina dropped game one.
The Diamond Heels seemed to be in full control of game two Saturday evening leading 2-1 after seven innings. However, the bullpen struggles that the team has faced all year came to life once again in the eighth and ninth inning. The Tar Heels gave up 4 runs in each inning and lost 9-4.
In game three and trying to salvage the series, the UNC offense once again struggled as they only scored two runs while giving up six and getting swept. The struggles this weekend were evident. Pitching, starting, and in relief, has been a concern and was again versus the Eagles. The struggles led Scott Forbes to make a major pitching move after this weekend’s poor performance.
Outside of looking at just the run totals and final scores from the weekend, just how bad was the last week (including the mid-week game vs Charlotte) for the Tar Heels? Pat James shares some insight on it.
Not being able to come up with timely hits with runners in scoring position can be costly, and it was several times for the Tar Heels over the past week. The Diamond Heels have now dropped out of the top 25 and are 25-15 overall with a 9-10 conference record.
Carolina will stay home for a mid-week matchup vs UNC-Wilmington on Tuesday at 6 PM before heading to Blacksburg, Virginia to face Virginia Tech for a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday series needing to get back on track.
