The UNC baseball team came from behind to win their mid-week game against in-state opponent Charlotte University yesterday, 5-3.

The Charlotte 49ers jumped on the Diamond Heels early Tuesday evening at The Bosh, scoring two runs in the first inning thanks to back-to-back two-out doubles.

The UNC baseball program attempted to answer in the first and second innings by loading the bases in each inning. However, the 49ers held strong and didn’t allow a single run with the bases loaded.

Due to some 49ers’ mistakes, the Diamond Heels finally broke through in the third inning.

Mac Horvath started the inning with a single before Hunter Stokely walked. Both players would then advance on a wild pitch putting them both in scoring position. An RBI single by Johnny Castagnozzi followed by a hit by pitch allowed the Tar Heels to tie the game at two.

North Carolina’s pitching held strong, not allowing the 49ers to get much else going offensively while buying the Tar Heel offense time to get going, which it did in the sixth inning for the lead. Tomas Frick had an RBI single that scored Horvath to give the Tar Heels the lead for good.

The Diamond Heels were able to add some insurance runs in the seventh inning on a Horvath 2-run home run to put the Tar Heels up 5-2. UNC would give up one run in the eighth inning, but the 49ers would have no more offense to keep up with the Tar Heels.

Unfortunately, this could have been a lot different of a game for Carolina if they could have capitalized with runners in scoring position. The Tar Heels left 19 runners on base and couldn’t seem to come up with timely hits with runners in scoring position. That is something that’s going to have to change in ACC play as we progress in the season if this team wants to make a deep run into June. The best teams in the country are good at getting two-out, RBI base hits. That’s something this team has to improve upon.

The UNC baseball program will stay at The Bosh this weekend and continue this long homestand with the Boston College Eagles coming into town for a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday.
