The UNC Basketball coaching staff has scheduled former Notre Dame guard Cormac Ryan for an official visit in the upcoming week.

Hubert Davis and his staff has been rumored to be in talks with Notre Dame transfer Cormac Ryan during the last several weeks to join the UNC basketball team and now that process has taken another step with him scheduling an official visit to Chapel Hill.

Ryan will be a graduate transfer for the 2023-2024 season and have one year of eligibility remaining. He started his career at Stanford before transferring to Notre Dame. In the last week of March, Ryan declared for the NBA draft while maintaining his collegiate eligibility and entering the transfer portal.

During his senior season at Notre Dame, he played and started in 32 games and averaged 34 minutes per game while scoring 12.3 points per game. At six-foot-five, Ryan has great size for his position and can certainly fill a need for the Tar Heels who lost three starters from last year’s team.

The difference between Ryan and other players that we have seen the UNC basketball coaching staff target this off-season is that his three-point shooting percentage isn’t that attractive at 34.4% last season, and 35.2% for his career. Ryan did shoot a career-best 40.7% from three during his junior season with the Fighting Irish.

However, Ryan is a guy who provides great size and can be a beneficial role player, and possibly even starter, to a team that has many holes to fill. He has ACC (and power five) experience and similarly to UNC commit Jae’lyn Withers, knows what it is like to face the rest of the conference.

Of course, just like other players, this is only an official visit. This by no means a commitment from Ryan to the Tar Heels is guaranteed and all options are still on the table for other players in the portal as well as for Ryan.
