UNC Basketball: Ian Jackson opens up about his future
By Jordan Falls
Future UNC Basketball commit Ian Jackson spoke with Adam Zagoria over the weekend about his future and teaming up with another recruit in the class of 2024.
About a week ago, Ian Jackson re-solidified his decision that he remains 100% committed to head coach Hubert Davis and the UNC Basketball program. He also said in that same segment that re-classifying to the class of 2023 was not something he was looking into.
Now, following an interview with Adam Zagoria with ZAGSBLOG, there has been some new information about his recruitment. Iona head coach Rick Pitino has now visited Jackson’s high school, Cardinal Hayes, twice in the last couple of weeks.
Jackson once again told Zagoria that he plans to remain committed to North Carolina
"“It means a lot, Coach Pitino’s a great coach. I appreciate him coming out, but as of right now my plan is to stay at North Carolina. He’s a legendary coach, so I appreciate him coming.”"
He followed it up with being asked if he would be flipping from UNC to St. John’s and this was his response.
"“Nah, I’m committed.”"
An additional factor that Zagoria reported on was the possibility of reclassification. Jackson told ZAGSBLOG that he is currently enrolled to take some online summer classes that would enable him to reclassify if he wishes to do so and it’s something he’s been working with Coach Davis on.
Jackson also spoke on the recruitment of top recruit Boogie Fland here, currently ranked no. 13 by 247Sports and the no. 2 combo guard in the country. Several schools have contacted Fland, but there hasn’t been much reported on his recruitment or who the top schools in the running to land him may be. Jackson told ZAGSBLOG he is actively recruiting Fland to join him in Chapel Hill in 2024. His message to Fland was simple.
"“Just come win a national championship. “We both [are] from New York, we get a chance to play each other in high school [in the New York Catholic League], so let’s try to do it in college.”"
Could Coach Davis and UNC land another big-time recruit for the class of 2024 and add to their already No. 1 overall-ranked class? It will certainly be something to keep an eye on.
If Jackson does opt to reclassify (and possibly bring Fland with him), that would be two of the five remaining scholarship spots filled and give Carolina fans some reassurance on how they fill for the 2023-2024 season coming off the disappointing end to the past year.
