Previewing the upcoming week for North Carolina Tar Heels Athletics for the week of April 3rd, 2023 thru April 9th, 2023.

Baseball: A huge week is coming up for the 13th-ranked Diamond Heels. First, they’ll face the 6th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks in Charlotte at Truist Field for a Battle of the Carolinas matchup on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.

The Gamecocks and Tar Heels both are offensive-minded squads. South Carolina is in the top ten in the country in the following categories: walks (3rd in the country), runs scored (5th), On-base % (7th), slugging % (5th), and they are first in home runs with 72 in 29 games. The Tar Heels have offensive power of their own which we discussed last week.

The Diamond Heels certainly have the offense to keep pace with their cross-state rival, it will be up to the Tar Heels pitching staff to keep the game within reach. This matchup has been played yearly since 2016 in Charlotte (minus the 2020 season due to COVID) and has brought runs every season. In all but two seasons (2019 and 2021) we have seen at least a total of 14 combined runs scored. Expect more of the same this year in Charlotte with these two offenses.

The Heels will stay on the road for a coastal division weekend series in Atlanta with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. UNC is currently 20-8 overall and 6-4 in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets are currently 1 game back from the Tar Heels in the coastal division sitting at 6-6. Georgia Tech has played two more games than UNC due to the Tar Heels having the final two games of their series at Pitt canceled. Game 1 will be on Friday at 6 PM, Game 2 on Saturday at 6 PM, and Game 3 on Sunday at 1 PM. All three games can be watched on ACCNX.

Men’s Tennis: The Tar Heels enter the week 15-6 and 7-2 in the ACC with one home match this week when they will face rival Duke on Saturday at 1 PM. UNC currently sits one game back from the Blue Devils in the ACC who are 15-5 overall and 8-1 in the conference.

Women’s Tennis: Carolina will look to continue its dominance as the #1 team in the country this week and remain undefeated. The Tar Heels are currently 24-0 overall and 10-0 in the ACC. Holding a one-game lead on rival Duke and a one-and-a-half-game lead on rival NC State, the Tar Heels will face the Wolfpack on Thursday at 5 PM in Chapel Hill. They will follow that match up with a home match vs Wake Forest on Saturday morning at 11 AM.

Men’s Lacrosse: After a twelve-day hiatus and riding a three-game winning streak, the Tar Heels will return to the field to face Virginia on Friday night at 6 PM on ACC Network. Carolina is tied with the Cavaliers for second in the ACC at 1-1.

Women’s Lacrosse: Carolina suffered their second loss of the season at Notre Dame over the weekend losing 16-12. It is the first time UNC has lost more than one game in the regular season since 2019. The Tar Heels will look to bounce back on Friday afternoon at 2 PM against the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Panthers are in the second year of their program and will come to Chapel Hill 2-5 overall and 0-6 in the conference. UNC sits at 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the ACC, currently one game behind Syracuse.
