MLB Opening Day is today and some former UNC Baseball players have found spots on opening day rosters across the league.

UNC Baseball has a few players on the MLB Opening Day rosters as the season gets started.

Zac Gallen: We wrote about Zac Gallen receiving the ball for Opening Day for the Arizona Diamondbacks last week. Gallen will enter his fifth season with the Diamondbacks coming off a career season and looking to be the ace of the pitching staff. The Diamondbacks have a late start on Opening Day. Gallen will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in LA at 10:10 PM E.T.

Jacob Stallings: Jacob Stallings will enter the season as one of two catchers for the Miami Marlins. Stallings played in 114 games for the Marlins in 2022 and hit .223 for them after spending six seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2022, Stallings was the main catcher for NL Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara. Expect more of Stallings behind the plate in 2023. The Marlins open the season at home against the New York Mets at 4:10 PM E.T.

Daniel Bard: Daniel Bard is entering his eighth season as a professional pitcher, however, that’s since 2009. By now, mostly everyone has heard of Bard’s story and his comeback in 2013 to get back to The Show. Bard will begin the 2023 season in the Colorado Rockies bullpen as a reliever. The Rockies open the season at the San Diego Padres at 4:10 PM E.T.

Trent Thornton: Trent Thornton will begin the season on the 40-man roster for the Toronto Blue Jays in the minor leagues. He made 32 appearances in 2022 for the Blue Jays, recording an 0-2 record and a 4.11 ERA. He has made 8 appearances during the 2023 spring training with a 1-0 record and a 6.48 ERA.

Trevor Kelley: Trevor Kelley will begin the season on the 40-man roster for the Tampa Bay Rays. He spent the 2022 season with the Milwaukee Brewers, making an appearance in 18 games and recording a 1-0 record with a 6.08 ERA. During 2023 spring training, he made 9 appearances with a 1.17 ERA.

Other Tar Heels who will be within MLB Organizations at the beginning of the year are Colin Moran (Seattle Mariners), Skye Bolt (Milwaukee Brewers), J.B. Bukauskas (Seattle Mariners), Brian Moran (Atlanta Braves), Kent Emanuel (Pittsburgh Pirates), Brian Miller (Miami Marlins), Cooper Criswell (Tampa Bay Rays) and Brendon Little (Chicago Cubs).

We will follow Tar Heels in the MLB all summer long!
