UNC Basketball: Washington announces plans for 2023-2024 Season
By Jordan Falls
UNC Basketball big man Jalen Washington announced his plans for next season on Friday evening.
It was a good day for the UNC Basketball program.
Friday began with the highly touted class of 2024 recruit Ian Jackson announcing he was 100% committed to the program. Then point guard RJ Davis announced via his Twitter page that he would be returning for his senior season in 2023-2024.
Jalen Washington announced, shortly after in response to Davis’ tweet that he would be returning with Davis for next season.
Washington was a 4-star recruit according to 247Sports who some believe has a very high ceiling. Washington battled several injuries prior to arriving at North Carolina which may have held him back during his freshman season.
His best outing was by far in Charlottesville vs Virginia when Armando Bacot suffered an ankle injury and left the game less than a minute in. Washington played 27 minutes in that game, scoring 13 points on 5-11 shooting. We didn’t get to see much more of him once Bacot returned, even though many fans were calling for head coach Hubert Davis to play Washington more after his performance at Virginia in place of Bacot.
Washington could have a much larger role next season as either the big man that starts alongside Bacot, or as the first big off the bench who relieves Bacot for rest, or if foul trouble becomes a factor.
It has been no secret that it felt like much of last season revolved around a team that seemed to have poor chemistry on the court and possibly in the locker room. We’ve seen four players enter the transfer portal and two more exhaust their eligibility. Needless to say, the 2023-2024 roster will certainly look much different than last season. However, it does appear that Coach Davis is keeping who he wants to keep and that if someone is leaving, it’s because the coaching staff feels that it is in the best interest of the player leaving and the future of the program.
