UNC Women’s Basketball set for rematch with rival NC State
By Drew Garrett
The No. 19 UNC Women’s Basketball team faces a strong test this Thursday night when they take on crosstown rival NC State.
After picking up a much-needed win on Sunday afternoon, the UNC women’s basketball program is set to face off against the NC State Wolfpack in a rematch between the two in-state rivals.
A lot has changed in the time since these last two teams met.
NC State, which was once at the top of the conference and national rankings, began to struggle. As of today, they are 17-8 overall and 7-7 in conference play.
On the other hand, the Tar Heels have played a high level of basketball. UNC won 8-straight games at one point and has won 9 of their last 11.
Despite how both teams’ seasons have panned out, this game will be a battle. If North Carolina wants to beat NC State yet again, here is what they will need to do.
Key To Victory
To beat NC State, North Carolina needs to be great defensively. This means playing aggressively, forcing turnovers, and grabbing rebounds.
In their last three games, NC State has had some major struggles offensively. They only broke 60 points twice and finished with a 1-2 record.
The Tar Heels cannot let the Wolfpack set the tone in this one.
NC State will likely try to come out strong in this one, as they will be playing in front of a packed home arena. If North Carolina can shut down the Wolfpack, they will give themselves a great opportunity to come away with a win.
Something To Watch
This Thursday it is worth keeping an eye on whether we get a strong individual performance.
In the last meeting with NC State, we saw fantastic outings from Destiny Adams and Paulina Paris. In this matchup, who could we see step up for the Tar Heels?
My pick would be Kayla McPherson. In her first five games this season, McPherson has been lights out for North Carolina, averaging 11.3 points on 50% shooting.
In her first career game against NC State, do not be surprised if the Freshman guard has a big night.
Last Meeting
In the last meeting between these two teams, North Carolina defeated NC State in a highly entertaining battle. The Tar Heels defended their home court, winning 56-47.
Kennedy Todd- Williams led UNC in scoring, but as I mentioned earlier, it was a strong performance from the entire team.
Despite the win, the Wolfpack still lead the all-time series 62-54.
