Grimes will now have 2 years of eligibility left with the Aggies. His time at the University of North Carolina has been an interesting journey, to say the least. After reclassifying the Class of 2020, Grimes enrolled at UNC in August of that year. The five-star prospect came into Chapel Hill highly touted to be one of the best cornerbacks in the nation.
As a true freshman in 2020, Grimes appeared in all twelve games and made four starts at defensive back and on special teams. He finished that season with 14 total tackles, one sack, and one interception.
For the 2021 season, Grimes started all 13 games at defensive back. He made the All-ACC Honorable Mention team. He finished the season with 47 tackles.
This season, Grimes played in 12 games with 27 solo tackles, and 9 assisted tackles for a total of 36. He did not record an interception.
For his time in Chapel Hill, he is credited with just one interception.
Grimes’ name is just one of many that come at a crazy time for college football and the transfer portal. Words like “tampering” and “buying” are being thrown around now that the NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) process has entered the mix. There is no suggestion being made here that this is the case with Grimes, but those words are being thrown around at many schools, by and about many coaches and programs.
With a number of players leaving Texas A&M for the NFL Draft, Grimes should have the opportunity to be a starter on day one for the Aggies.
