UNC Women’s Basketball vs. Wofford Preview
By Drew Garrett
The No. 8 ranked UNC women’s basketball team looks to secure its eighth win of the season this Sunday against the Wofford Terriers.
Courtney Banghart and the UNC women’s basketball program return to Carmichael Arena this Sunday when they take on the Wofford Terriers in a non-conference matchup.
The Tar Heels are off to an excellent start this season. Sitting at 7-1, North Carolina is coming off a dominating win over UNC Wilmington last Wednesday.
Alyssa Ustby led the way with 16 points, and Deja Kelly and Kennedy-Todd Williams both finished in double figures.
Wofford won’t be an easy opponent for North Carolina.
The Terriers have won seven straight games and are looking to improve that mark to eight. They are led by sophomore guard Rachel Rose, who leads the team in points, rebounds, assists, and steals.
If the Tar Heels want to secure a win Sunday, here is what they have to do.
Key to Victory
In their victory Wednesday, North Carolina forced UNC Wilmington to turn over the ball 22 times. If this success can be replicated Sunday, the Tar Heels will be in good shape.
UNC should try to up the pressure against Wofford and cause them to be careless with the ball.
A lot of their focus should also be on Rachel Rose.
Rose is the most important player on this team and is the key to their success. By removing her from the equation, the Tar Heels put themselves at a major advantage.
Something To Watch
It is worth watching Alyssa Ustby’s performance in this one.
Following a rough outing vs. Indiana, Ustby bounced back and delivered in the Tar Heel’s win Wednesday night.
Against Wofford, Ustby has an opportunity to continue her excellent junior season as the Terriers have struggled to guard inside the paint this year.
Ustby may receive touches early in this one and will be key to putting this one away.
Last Meeting
This is the first meeting between these two schools since 2008.
The No. 2- ranked Tar Heels throttled the Terriers 96-42, on November 25, 2008.
Chey Shegog led the way for North Carolina, posting 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The All-time series is 6-0 in favor of North Carolina.
