UNC Basketball: Random Observations Virginia Tech Loss
By Aaron Conrad
UNC Basketball dropped their fourth straight loss to Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon 80-72. These are some random observations from the latest loss.
One trend for this UNC basketball team from the very first game of the season has been a tendency to get behind early and make a late push. That worked against less talented opponents but is now a real problem in the losing streak.
The story was the same today in a hostile home game for Virginia Tech. Yes, the team was without pre-season ACC player of the year Armando Bacot. Yes, this team has been on the road more than they have been home the past two weeks.
The trend is still there and until they compete for a full 40 minutes, this team will not achieve their goals.
Head Coach Hubert Davis was forced to use his bench today with Bacot and D’Marco Dunn out and Caleb Love in early foul trouble. The bench players played as well as can be expected given the limited action so far this season.
Whatever happened to the legendary secondary break for UNC?
Coach Davis has clearly moved to an entirely new philosophy (spread floor, three-point shooting) like so many other teams but it seems odd to abandon so much of what made Carolina Basketball a staple each year.
Not beginning possessions in the post or featuring the big men are almost like Syracuse not playing zone defense. It just doesn’t seem right.
I am not yet ready to say that it is a talent issue. I believe it is a scheme and connectedness issue.
There seems to be a lot of one-on-one play and very little ball and man movement.
This team is way too easy to defend. Too predictable.
The offense will fix the defense and vice versa. Until one gets right, they’ll both be bad.
UNC has the parts to be an offensive juggernaut but it starts with ball movement, cutting without the ball, and getting easier shots.
This could be a very long season if something doesn’t change soon.
