UNC Football Drops in Latest College Football Playoff Rankings
By Mark DeMott
The UNC football team has slipped a couple of spots in the College Football Playoff Rankings after their loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday.
Losing at home to an unranked opponent is usually going to result in a drop in the polls, and that’s exactly what happened to the UNC football program in Tuesday’s College Football Playoff Rankings.
The Tar Heels have dropped from No. 13 to No. 17 in the new rankings following their stunning loss against Georgia Tech. While the loss eliminated the Tar Heels from any outside shot that they had at contending for the CFP, there is still plenty for North Carolina to play for over the next few weeks with a huge rivalry game, an ACC Championship, and a New Year’s Six Bowl all still on the table.
The top of the rankings remained the same, with Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, and TCU rounding out the top four. Tennessee dropped to number 10 after losing to South Carolina, resulting in a one-spot rise for LSU, USC, Alabama, and Clemson. The rest of the poll can be seen below:
In the ACC, Clemson is still the highest-ranked squad coming in at #8. The Tigers have a shot at the playoffs if they can win out and get a little bit of help above them. Florida State is now the second-highest-ranked team in the league, coming in at #16. While NC State dropped out, Louisville entered the poll at #25 after beating the Wolfpack on Saturday.
For the UNC football program, the College Football Playoffs are now completely out of the picture, but an ACC Title and Orange Bowl appearance will be on the line next weekend when the Heels take on Clemson. With a Black Friday showdown against NC State coming up this Friday as well, there is still plenty of meaningful football left for North Carolina to play, which is not often the case this late into the season.
