The UNC Basketball program opened its season with a 69-56 win over UNC Wilmington on Monday night. During the broadcast, RJ Davis was mentioned as the most important player for the Tar Heels.

The season is officially here and the UNC basketball program started off with a win.

While the game was not a blowout as many would anticipate and expect from the number one team in the country, it did give some preview of players, lineups, and off-season growth.

The “Big Three” of Caleb Love, Armando Bacot, and RJ Davis played well but not great. Yes, they finished the game with 17 points (Love and Davis) and 16 points (Bacot) respectively, it was not the sharpest offensive output that many anticipate.

At one point during the game, the ACC Network commentators Doug Sherman and Randolph Childress raised the question of who would be the Tar Heels MVP this season. They both discussed how important junior guard RJ Davis is to North Carolina and agreed that he might be the Most Valuable Player to this team.

Davis finished the game with 17 points, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 steal, and 4 rebounds in 37 minutes of action. He left the game for a very short rest after an apparent injury but returned to the game looking aggressive and solid. His work in the offseason on his defense was obvious as he battled the guards from UNCW.

With a team rich in talent and depth, could Davis be the most valuable player? We won’t know this after one game but it was clear last season that Davis being the primary point guard made the entire team roll. At one point, Davis went coast to coast when the Tar Heels really needed a bucket. Very similar to how former Tar Heel Ty Lawson used to do it.

The beauty of this edition of the Tar Heels is that they could have a different MVP every night. One to watch will certainly be RJ Davis.
