In his first game for UNC Basketball, transfer Pete Nance gave Tar Heel fans a glimpse of how valuable he can be on both offense and defense this season.

The UNC Basketball program opened their season last night with a 69-56 win over UNC Wilmington last.  While the much anticipated start of the season was, at times, less than impressive, one player stood out.

Graduate student transfer Pete Nance showed last night why he was such an important piece to the Tar Heels’ championship hopes. Many will make comparisons to Nance filling the position that was previously occupied by former Tar Heel Brady Manek. Both transfers, it would seem to make sense to connect those two dots, however Nance showed last night why he is similar but different to Manek in many ways.

Nance opened the Tar Heels season at the four spot in the lineup and immediately made impacts on both sides of the floor. He finished the game with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 steal in 34 minutes.

While many would like to see those totals higher, it’s important to recognize that Nance brought leadership, experience and balance to the Tar Heels lineup. There is no question that the scoring and other statistics will go up as the season progresses.

In his first game for the Tar Heels, Nance was steady and the most consistent player on the floor. He was able to fill in when Armando Bacot went to the bench with four fouls in the second half. Coach Davis went with a four guard and one big man lineup that was athletic and effective.

Having a mobile, athletic big man that can play a number of positions and even handle the ball will be critical to the Tar Heels season. Nance showed last night that he will gladly accept that role.
