The UNC football program is back in the College Football Playoff Rankings for the first time since the 2020 season.

After a very disappointing campaign last year, the North Carolina football team has rebounded in a big way through the first eight games of this season.  The Tar Heels are 7-1 overall, undefeated halfway through ACC play, and in the driver’s seat in the Coastal Division as the calendar turns to November.

Although there has been plenty of criticism from national media regarding the Tar Heels (specifically the defense), Carolina continues to find ways to win.  In a season that UNC entered with a ton of question marks (replacing Sam Howell and a new defensive scheme to name a few), the Heels will be playing meaningful football in November and currently have all of their goals still on the table.

Carolina’s impressive start has earned them a spot in the first edition of this year’s College Football Playoff Committee Rankings, where they come in at No. 17  The Tar Heels are the second highest ranked team in the ACC, behind only Clemson who comes in at #4.

Other ACC teams that made this first edition of the rankings are Syracuse (No. 20), Wake Forest (No. 21), and NC State (No. 22)

If the season ended today, the College Football Playoff would include No. 1 Tennessee, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Georgia, and No. 4 Clemson with Michigan and Alabama as the first two teams out.  The entire Top 25 is as follows:

With four games left to play, the UNC football program is in a position where things could get awfully interesting if they continue to stack wins.  The Tar Heels will look to all but seal up the Coastal Division and climb the CFP Rankings this Saturday when Drake Maye and company head to Charlottesville to take on Virginia.
