The UNC Basketball team is listed at No. 9 overall in the Pomeroy College Basketball Rankings before the start of the 2022-2023 basketball season.

The UNC Basketball program continues to be near the top of many lists this preseason and Kenpom.com is no different. Let’s start by explaining what who Ken Pomeroy is before we really dig into the preseason ratings.

"Ken Pomeroy is the creator of the college basketball website and statistical archive KenPom. His website includes his College Basketball Ratings, statistics for every NCAA men’s Division I basketball team, with archives dating back to the 2002 season, as well as a blog about current college basketball.Throughout the season, Pomeroy continually updates his KenPom ratings for all 363 Division I men’s basketball programs with metrics such as offensive and defensive efficiency, tempo, and pace"

Many fans and even Division I programs will look to Pomeroy for a deeper dive into team’s statistical categories and information. His data and statistics are usually very close when it comes to looking at matchups and forecasting the outcome of a game.

With that, let’s take a look at his current Top 10 teams for the preseason and a few notable others.

Kenpom.com currently lists Kentucky (1), Texas (2), Gonzaga (3), Tennessee (4), Virginia (5), Baylor (6), Houston (7), Kansas (8), North Carolina (9) and Arizona (10).

In terms of the ACC, KenPom ranks Virginia (5), UNC (6), Duke (15), Virginia Tech (21), Miami (42), and Notre Dame (43). All other ACC schools were outside his Top 50. So what does all of this mean?

Not much at the moment. As the season progresses and statistics begin to pour in, the KenPom ratings will continue to update and sharpen. For now, this is all based on previous statistics and other factors that Pomeroy is famous for.
